From an early age, I was interested in Performing Arts. I took part in school productions, attended CYM (Centre for Young Musicians) and attended classes at Young and Talented (Performing Arts Youth Group).
In 2007, I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis and was in and out of a wheelchair for a year, until it was necessary for me to be in it in order to be mobile.
In 2008, I auditioned for East London Dance's Youth Company (currently known as Limitless). Under the guidance of artistic directors Cindy Claes and Nas Evanson, I trained in Hip Hop, Contemporary, Dance Theatre, African, Krump and Dancehall.
In 2009, I was introduced to Candoco, an integrated dance company and joined their youth group Cando2.
In 2010, I was asked to join a newly formed Integrated company Murlow Inter-Motion now known as Sardines Dance Collective. As a member of the company, I also have been working with the directors to help teach workshops in inclusivity, assist in the teaching of the youth group for Sardines: Complete Connections Youth Dance (CCYD) and being a choreographic eye and contributer for new works we are creating
In 2015/6 I did a number of projects as a dancer:
Stopgaps Seafarers - an inclusive outdoor piece with both a professional and outreach cast - Click Here to view the trailer.
State of Emergency's CoMission - the first project that they've done pairing together a black choreographer and a disabled dancer - I was the emerging artist and part of the cast for Choices and Consequences. Click here to view.
I was also a part of People Dancing's 11 Million Reasons Photoshoot - Chicago, and took part in some of the videos they made to promote the tour - Click here to view a short clip
In 2017 I created my brand of LauraDDances, continuing to develop myself as an independent freelance artist, researching, exploring and training in different dance forms to developing my own choreographic practice and vocabulary.
In creating my own work, I hope to bring together artists from all backgrounds, any art form to collaborate and work together to create interesting, innovative and inspiring work - I'm always looking for collaborators who share a love for what they do and with mutual interests of creating new work.
I strongly believe ANYONE CAN DANCE regardless of age, race or disability.
